Joan’s Marie Linnewerth Choate Obituary – Death: Mrs. Joan Marie Linnewerth Choate, age 86, of downtown Madison, Indiana entered this life on August 25, 1935, in Jersey City, New Jersey. She was the loving daughter of the late Edwin J. and Helen E. Ketcham Linnewerth. She was raised in Weehawken Township, New Jersey. She graduated from Northfield School for Girls in 1952. She then attended the University of New Hampshire. On June 30, 1956, she was united in marriage to Alexander “Sandy” Choate in Union City, New Jersey. This happy union of 42 years was blessed with a daughter, Lauren, and sons, Perry and Stephen. They resided for a time in Washington D.C and she worked as a life insurance underwriter.

She was proud of her life office management degree that she had obtained. Sandy served as an Episcopal Priest which led them to serve in several communities including Wappingers Falls, New York, and Newburgh, Indiana from 1972-to 1985. They moved to Madison in 1985 and she owned and operated the Cozy Station and then later, she had a Christmas shop. Joan was very active in the life of downtown Madison. She loved socializing with the community, participating in our festivals, and volunteering with groups such as the Ulster Project. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in downtown Madison on Mulberry Street. Joan and Sandy loved to sing and participated many years in the Messiah. She also sang with the Sweet Adaline’s and enjoyed membership in the Red Hat Society. While living in Poughkeepsie, New York she helped start the hospice program there. Joan had an interest in kaleidoscopes, collecting elephants and lambs. Traveling was always an interest of hers as well as knitting. Joan died on Thursday, February 3, 2022, at 11:50 p.m. at the River Terrace Health Campus in Madison, Indiana.

A LOVING FAMILY

Joan will be missed by her loving daughter, Lauren Gail Choate of Denver, Colorado; her loving son, Perry Lawrence Choate of Palmdale, California; her grandchildren, Matt, Jason, Andrew, David, and Nicholas; her great-grandchildren, Luke and Hailey, and Athena who will be born this summer. She also has several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her father, Edwin J. Linnewerth, her mother, Helen E. Ketcham Linnewerth, her beloved husband of 42 years, The Reverand Alexander “Sandy” Choate, her son, Stephen Alexander Choate, died February 22, 2018, her sister, Caroline Toomey, and her brother, Edwin Linnewerth.

CELEBRATION OF LIFE GATHERING

Joan will be remembered in a time of celebration conducted Monday, February 7, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., by The Reverend Mary Smolenski at the Christ Episcopal Church Fellowship Hall, 506 Mulberry Street in downtown Madison, Indiana. Joan’s urn will be placed in the Christ Episcopal Church Columbarium.
